Inside the Rathaus stands the statue of Lucius Munatius Plancus.

Lucius Munatius Plancus was the Roman founder of Augusta Raurica at the south bank of the Rhine a few kilometers east of Basel.

Augusta Rarica was founded circa 44-43 BCE,& was the first Roman colony constructed along the Rhine. It quickly grew into a city and by c. 200 CE, Augusta Raurica had between 10,000-20,000 inhabitants in its short-lived heyday.
