Looking back across the Tahai site, all of the moai can be seen with the town of Hanga Roa in the background across the water.

Most of the roughly 6000 people on the island lived in Hanga Roa. Almost none lived in the countryside.

Nearly all the moai were facing inland, away from the sea. There was no reason to watch or fear the sea, no threats came from that direction.
