This has nothig to do with this picture, but strongly affected the history of this area. The 'Alaska' gold rush was centered in Yukon Canada, about 300 miiles east of here, but not so far from the Alaska border.

Gold was discovered on Bonanza Creek near the Klondike River in Aug 1896. The rush lasted untill ca 1899 when gold was found in western Alaska & some of the attention shifted there.

A large quantity of gold was found during the few years of the rush. NPS Gold rush.
